Until someone saw one, a black swan was impossible.

For centuries in Europe, the idea of a black swan was used to describe something that simply could not exist. Every swan anyone knew was white — therefore, surely, all swans were white.

Then European explorers reached Australia and encountered black swans.

Suddenly, something that had stood as a symbol of impossibility was swimming around quite happily on the other side of the world.

We love that story — a beautiful reminder that the world is always capable of surprising us, and that what we know is limited by what we've had the chance to see.
